Karimabad to Askolie

La traversée de Karimabad à  Askoli oblige de passer par les glaciers de l’Hisper et Biafo ou de couper par la haute montagne avec un col à  5600m. J’ai choisi cette dernière option en passant par le Spantik (Golden peak), en traversant 60km de glacier. L’engagement est total, il n’y a pas de retour en arrière possible. Il faut voler ou marcher longtemps!

The crossing from Karimabad to Askoli obliged to go through the glaciers Hisper and Biafo or go straight by high mountains with a pass at 5500m. I chose this last option through the Spantik (Golden Peak), crossing 60km of glacier. The commitment is total, there is no turning back possibility. Must fly or walk long!

Je viens de recevoir ma nouvelle voile, une Boom 10 de chez Gin.
J’ai pu la tester au col Agnel sur 2 jours. J’ai réussi à  boucler deux triangles FAI de 268km et 284km. Presque 11h de vol pour le plus long.
Content pour un premier test de la voile 😉

I just received my new paraglide, a Boom 10 from Gin.
I was able to test the col Agnel for 2 days. I managed to complete two FAI triangles of 268km and 284km. Almost 11 hours of flight for the longest
Happy for a first test with this wing 😉

Deosai!

La traversée du Deosai est un grand moment du voyage au Pakistan. Un plateau sauvage de 40km situé entre 4000 et 5000m d’altitude. Les reliefs sont rares, et il est peuplé d’ours brun, de léopards des neiges, loups gris, Ibex, renards, marmots, etc.
Il a été traversé qu’une fois auparavant en parapente, il est difficile de poser sur le plateau car il faudrait marcher longtemps avant de trouver un relief suffisamment haut pour décoller et trouver des thermiques.
Le plafond était à  5700m le jour de la traversée avec un léger vent de face. J’ai eu le droit à  quelques sueurs froides afin de ne pas poser.

Crossing the Deosai plateau, a highlight of the Pakistan trip. A wild plateau of 40km between 4000 and 5000m of altitude. The reliefs are rare where live Himalayan brown bear, snow leopard, gray wolf, Himalayan ibex, red fox, golden marmot, etc.
It has been paragliding crossed only one time before, it’s hard to land on the plateau because it would walk long distances to find a sufficiently high relief to take off and find thermals.
The cloud base was at 5700m with a slight front wind. I can have lot of cold sweat to not landing!

J’ai effectué 1260km de vol bivouac en solitaire au Pakistan en 19 jours.
Une super expérience dans un milieu sauvage. De superbes rencontres avec les Pakistanais.
Le voyage à  été marqué par plusieurs highlight ! Dans l’ordre chronologique :
– Traversée du plateau du Deosai en volant. Un plateau sauvage à  5000m sans vraiment de relief
– Contournement du Nangat Parbat (8 126m) et passage par des hauts cols
– Un vol de 150km le long du glacier Biafo et Hisper entre Karimabad et Payu. Passage par le pied du Spantik (Golden Peak, 7027m) et 60km de glacier a traverser
– Un vol de 120km dont 60km au-dessus du glacier du Baltoro
– Le survol du Broad Peak(8 051m) et la montée à  8157m !
– Un vol de 248km qui est le record de vol de distance du Pakistan

Je vais revenir sur chacun de ces highlights. Aujourd’hui je vais présenter rapidement celui qui est le plus marquant avec la montée au Broad Peak et ce nouveau record d’altitude.

Après 50km de vol j’arrive à  l’issu d’une longue transition sur le Broad Peak à  5740m, de petit cumulus sont à  6800m. Les thermiques s’installent doucement. Le plafond monte à  7000m et me permet d’attaquer les parois rocheuses et trouver d’autres thermiques au-dessus des nuages. Le vent est faible voire inexistant jusqu’à  7500m. Au-dessus de 8000m le vent devient conséquent (50km/h ???) et orienté au nord. Il n’est pas possible de faire du soaring sur cette crête orientée nord-sud. Je quitte le thermique vers 8 100m car j’ai tous les doigts de gelés, il était certainement possible de monter à  plus de 8300m. Je fais 2 allers-retour sur la crête pour les images et je pars (fuit) vers un oxygène plus abondant et 70km de vols.

The trip was marked by several highlight! In chronological order :
– Crossed the Deosai plateau in fly. A wild plateau at 5000m with small relief
– Bypass Nangat Parbat (8126m) and cross several pass
– A flight of 150km along the glacier Biafo and Hisper between Karimabad and Payu. Passage by the the Spantik (Golden Peak, 7027m) and 60km of glacier crossed
– A flight of 120km with 60km above the Baltoro glacier
– Fly over Broad Peak (8 051m) and flight up 8157m!
– A flight of 248km, which is the record of cross country fly in Pakistan

I will peak about of each of these highlights. Today I will briefly introduce one that is most prominent with the fly over Broad Peak and the new altitude record.

After a flight of 50km and a long transition I reach at 5740m on Broad Peak, small cumulus are at 6800m. I wait one hour without go up. The ceiling rises to 7000m and allows me to attack the cliffs and find other thermal above the clouds. The wind is weak at 7500m, maybe nonexistent. Above 8000m the wind becomes moderate (50km / h ???) and oriented north. It is not possible to do soaring on this north-south ridge. I leave the thermal to 8 100m because I have all fingers frozen, it was certainly possible to mount more than 8300m. I make two go and back over the ridge for take images and I’m leave (fleeing) to a more abundant oxygen and 70km of flight.

Le sac est prêt! Je m’envole cette nuit pour un périple de plus d’un mois au cœur de l’Himalaya sauvage. L’objectif est de parcourir 1000km en vol bivouac et en solitaire.
Je prends avec moi de l’oxygéne et les affaires de haute montagne, je devrais passer au pied de 5 sommets de plus de 8000m ! Je n’ai plus qu’à  espérer le beau temps.

My bag is ready! I will fly tonight for one month trip in the heart of the wild Himalayas. The aim is to cover 1000km in hike and fly alone.
I take with me the oxygen and high mountain equipment, I should go in front of 5 peaks over 8000m! I hope for good weather 😉
